Standard Chartered Now Holds RLUSD and May Let Traders Use It as Collateral
The global bank added custody for Ripple's RLUSD stablecoin and is eyeing a deal that would let institutions post it as trading collateral.
Standard Chartered just made a pretty big move in the stablecoin world: the global banking giant has officially launched custody services for Ripple's RLUSD stablecoin, which runs on the XRP Ledger. In plain English, that means the bank is now holding RLUSD on behalf of institutional clients — treating it like a real, bankable asset rather than some crypto curiosity.
But the bank isn't stopping at simply keeping the tokens safe. According to the report, Standard Chartered is also eyeing a deal with LMAX — a major institutional trading venue — that would allow clients to use RLUSD as collateral when they trade. Collateral is basically the deposit you put up to back a trade, so if institutions can post a stablecoin instead of cash or bonds, that's a meaningful shift in how crypto assets fit into traditional finance plumbing.

This matters because stablecoins have been slowly inching their way into institutional workflows, but custody and collateral acceptance by a bank of Standard Chartered's size signals a new level of legitimacy. RLUSD is Ripple's dollar-pegged stablecoin, and having a top-tier custodian hold it — and potentially accept it as margin — could open the door for much wider adoption among hedge funds, asset managers, and other big-money players who need regulatory-grade infrastructure before they'll touch anything crypto-adjacent.
For the broader market, it's another data point suggesting that stablecoins are graduating from "crypto trading tool" to something closer to a proper financial instrument. Whether RLUSD can capitalize on that momentum depends heavily on how quickly deals like the potential LMAX arrangement actually get across the finish line.
